The Las Olas Company

Our Mission
The Las Olas Company is committed to providing exceptional service, products and value, in a unique destination, while ensuring a fair return to all stakeholders. We will serve everyone with care, integrity and professionalism.

History
In the early 1930’s, two brothers from Chicago, Preston and John Wells, began visiting Fort Lauderdale. Having made their fortunes in Chicago real estate, the two brothers decided to lay down roots in Fort Lauderdale. The brothers began purchasing property, most of which is now the famous Las Olas Boulevard. In 1936, they opened the Champ Carr Hotel (later renamed The Riverside Hotel) which was then and remains today, the cornerstone of what is commonly referred to as ”the crown jewel of Fort Lauderdale,” Las Olas Boulevard. Today, the charming Las Olas Boulevard attracts strolling visitors and shoppers from around the world as well as the neighbors from just down the street, offering an eclectic blend of fine and casual dining, art and antiques, extraordinary jewelry and gifts and an abundance of unique boutiques. The Las Olas Company currently owns, leases and manages approximately eighty-five percent of the retail real estate on Las Olas Boulevard as well as owning an additional acreage of prime retail, office and residential development opportunities.

Las Olas Boulevard Today

http://lasolascompany.com
Las Olas Boulevard is so much more than a location. It is an experience. A quaint boulevard lined with old fashion street lamps and unique storefronts reminiscent of times gone by. Within minutes of the Fort Lauderdale International Airport, Port Everglades Seaport, the white sands of Fort Lauderdale Beach, the Performing Arts Center, Museum of Discovery & Science, Museum of Art, the historic Stranahan House, not to mention the multitude of office buildings located just a short walk from the restaurants and shops.

Las Olas Boulevard serves as a gathering place for residents of Broward, Palm Beach and Dade Counties by offering fun-filled outdoor events throughout the year. Among the events are Christmas on Las Olas, which attracts over 50,000 attendees each year, three nationally recognized Art Festivals, Las Olas Wine and Food Festival, Riverwalk Trust’s Burger Battle, monthly “Art Walks” and an assortment of other events appealing to all ages.

The Boulevard is well positioned to take advantage of the tourist market, whether travelers are here for the season, the week or are looking for a way to spend their pre and post-cruise time. Port Everglades (anticipated to be the “number one” cruise port in the world as a result of the Oasis class ships and the port’s recent agreement with Carnival Cruise Lines) is only a short ride from the heart of Las Olas Boulevard.

Residents of the nearby affluent neighborhoods of Las Olas Isles, Harbor Beach, Victoria Park, Rio Vista, Idewyld, and the numerous high rise condominiums in downtown Fort Lauderdale consider Las Olas Boulevard as their neighborhood gathering place to be with family, friends and business associates.

The values that were established by the Wells family over 75 years ago continue to serve the community and will continue to guide the growth of the company into the future.

Seminole Tribe of Florida

Seminole Tribe Timeline

Look at a graphic or text only version of a Seminole timeline spanning history as far back as the early 1500s.

Introduction

The unique confluence of culture and circumstance which would become today’s Seminole Tribe of Florida can be traced back at least 12,000 years, say researchers.

Indian Resistance and Removal

In the early days of its existence, the fledgling United States government carried out a policy of displacement and extermination against the American Indians in the eastern US, systematically removing them from the path of settlement. Until 1821, Florida remained under the control of the government of Spain but the US Territories of Georgia, Alabama, and Louisiana were its covetous next-door neighbors. It was clear that the US wanted the Spaniards out of Florida and was willing to consider any means, including warfare, to acquire the rich land.

Osceola and Abiaka

Though his exploits were not as well publicized, Seminole medicine man Abiaka may have been more important to the internal Seminole war machine than Osceola.

No Surrender!

By May 10, 1842, when a frustrated President John Tyler ordered the end of military actions against the Seminoles, over $20 million had been spent, 1500 American soldiers had died and still no formal peace treaty had been signed.

Survival In The Swamp

The Seminoles began the 20th century where they had been left at the conclusion of the Seminole Wars – in abject poverty, hiding out in remote

camps in the wet wilderness areas of South Florida.

The Council Oak

A special generation of Seminole leaders – children of that last generation to hide in the swamps – began to meet regularly beneath a huge oak tree on the Hollywood reservation.

Seminoles Today

The Seminole Tribe of Florida has matured both politically and financially.

The Future

The challenge of maintaining the unique Seminole culture while operating in the mainstream economy is the priority for today’s Seminole Tribe of Florida.

Publix Super Markets Inc.

Publix Culture

Publix aims to be a great employer. We hire associates who have a servant’s heart. We strive to build positive relationships with our customers and neighbors in our communities. We value giving back because we believe it’s our responsibility and our privilege. We are company owners.

Our founder, Mr. George, said, “Publix will be a little better place — or not quite as good — because of you.” Today, Publix is better and stronger because of what Publix associates have done and continue to do. We believe everything we’ve achieved is directly connected to our associates and the pride they take in their jobs and in how they support their communities. Our associates make a difference by volunteering to help meet the needs of many local organizations. When we support our neighbors, we also support each other.

Publix associates — past and present — make up the Publix family, and that is part of why Publix is so special. Mr. George believed it years ago, and we still believe it today — when you own something you tend to value it more and take better care of it.

Pat Anderson, Artist

Pat AndersonPat Anderson’s art combines detail and vibrant colors into an interesting new image of a subject. Her imagination, artistic experiences, and extensive island cruising with Capt. Pete, her late husband, have provided additional character and depth to her paintings.

Pat created and published “My Own Cruising Journal,” an actual journal of her artwork while cruising together on their yacht, in 1992, and expanded this cover design onto a variety of garments and merchandise.

In 1996, the large retail store named after My Own Cruising Journal opened in the upscale city of Lighthouse Point, FL. They expanded the business by selling several lines of tropical and marine clothing, gifts, and pieces of artwork.

Prints of the painting are available for sale on this website and Pat Anderson Artist Loft in “Latitiude 25” store in Islamorada in the Florida Keys. http://myowncruisingjournal.com
